Behind the Words

After 30 plus years as a classroom teacher and outdoor educator I have read a LOT of children's books! They can  provoke critical thinking, inspire kids to learn more and excite them about the world they live in.

During my years as an outdoor educator I was amazed by nature every day. Learning alongside my students we discovered that our own backyards were alive with remarkable creatures. Many children know about giraffes and elephants but have never heard of the Northern Short-Tailed Shrew, one of the most common animals in our region!

To start my writing journey I choose and carefully research a local species that is often overlooked or maligned. I use a host of resources including seeking opportunities to see the species in person.  For example, I traveled to the Mountsberg Raptor Centre to meet with a rescued Turkey Vulture, Buzz,, where I learned some very cool facts from his handler. (You'll have to read A Remarkable Redhead to learn more!)

When my research is complete I review the information and a story begins to come to life. Each book in the Unlikely Favourites series has a style as unique as the animal being revealed. If after reading my books children begin to wonder aloud and ask questions, then I have done my job!
